Once home to a large Anglo-Saxon population Smithfield is now a communally diverse neighbourhood due to a large influx of citizens from Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. New residents of Toronto and new immigrants to Canada are especially attracted to this neighbourhood due to it's large amount of affordable public housings.

This neighboruhood is bordered by the Humber River Vally on the South, East and West as well as Steeles Avenue-Royalcrest Park-Finch Avenue on the North side.

Notable Amenities at Smithfield are: 

1. School: Among the extensive list of public and Catholic schools and institutes in Smithfield are Highfield Junior School which earned the National Quality Institute's Blue Leaf Award for Excellence in Education in 2006 and John D. Parker Junior School named after Mr. John D. Parker who is one of the original seven trustees elected to the Board of Education for the Township of Etobicoke in May 1969.

2. Food and Restaurants: Try the 100% recommended Samosa and Sweet Factory, the best roti outside of Trinidad at Ram's Roti Shop, great value for great food at Wok of Asia or excellent food that's always fresh and tasty at The Hearty Kitchen

3. Leisure and Recreation: Shoppers World Albion is a large indoor mall anchored by a department store and a supermarket and containing a mix of franchise stores and independent retailers. Additionally, the retail corridor along Highway 27 north of Finch Avenue includes a large garden centre, a car dealership, big box stores, a discount mall, a bingo hall and the Albion Flea Market which includes over 400 vendors.

Since Smithfield is bordered mostly by the Humber River Valley, residents in this neighbourhood can exercise or take a leisurely stroll in the West Humber Parkland trail. Residents of all ages can also enjoy a variety of recreational activities at the Smithfield Community School, the Albion Pool and Health Club, and the Humberwood Community Centre.
